Chris
Evans used to design and program fruit machines and then worked
as an embedded systems programmer for a car-parts company. Chris started
utilising his programming skills to realise artistic works in 2000, supporting
works by Paul Granjon and Stefhan Caddick. Since 2001 he has been pursing his own artistic career. Projects such as 'Avoid missing ball for higher score', which was a projection of 'Pong' onto the pavement just outside Gallery 39, Cardiff and 'We will destroy you' , a hidden camera was installed inside a Space Invaders machine, the resulting images were projected onto the wall of the gallery bar. This year Chris will be participating in the LoveBytes festival in Sheffield. |

Chris Evans will be presenting a live action version of Space Invaders, which will involve thirteen volunteers recreating the classic arcade game as a stage performance. Each volunteer will have their own simple sequence of instructions to follow, which will define the rules of how they interact with the rest of the system. We will then have thirteen semi-autonomous procedures, each modelling a different part of the game - a bit like in Tron. This should map the functionality of the original game reasonably accurately. The word 'should' is used with good reason, as this will be the first time this project has been attempted, so there may well be some on-the-spot debugging required. Although a little imagination will be required from the audience, the familiar sights, sounds and, to some extent, smells of the game will all be present to help make the required leap of faith a little easier. As well as the aliens controlled by their instruction sheets, we'll also need brave humans to man our defence bases, protecting our planet from the evil attackers. These free thinking humans will be the only external input to this system. Players will be able to move left, move right and even fire. Anyone attending will be welcome to relive some of their childhood by taking on the role of alien, base, missile, or even programmer - if we need any debugging. And don't forget to bring 10p. |
